BIG basketball excitement in store today as NBA bounces into Sun Youth!

Ever since it started in 1954, the Sun Youth Organization has offered sports programs to Montreal children and teenagers. With its basketball program, the organization allows over 200 boys and girls to experience friendly competition in a supervised environment, during both the summer and winter. Through sports, these young athletes develop skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Sun Youth is very proud of the high number of its ex-athletes who have gone on to professional careers not only in sports (Joel Anthony, NBA champion Miami Heat; Kris Joseph, drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2012), but also in fields such as law, engineering, and police work.

To support its many sports teams, Sun Youth has always relied on the generosity of professional sports organizations. Throughout the years, famed clubs such as the Montreal Canadiens and the Montreal Alouettes have organized fundraisers and made financial contributions to Sun Youth. This time around, the organization is very fortunate to benefit from the support of the NBA, which will announce its support to the refurbishment of Sun Youth’s gym today.

This Friday, October 18th, 2013 at 10 AM, NBA legend Robert Parish, 4 time champion with the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls, will be at Sun Youth to take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony and to run a clinic on the organization’s refurbished court. He will be accompanied by the Minnesota Timberwolves Dancers and mascot Crunch. Representatives of the media are invited to attend this event, which will take place at 4251 St-Urbain. In the afternoon, Mr. Parish, will hold a second basketball clinic, which will be attended by a few dozen Sun Youth players.

Sun Youth would like to thank both the NBA and Bell Canada for making the refurbishment of our gym possible. “Basketball, and sport in general, has the power to bring people together and to teach positive values such as dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship”, said Dan MacKenzie, Vice President and General Manager, NBA Canada. “Bell and the NBA share a commitment to giving back to the communities in which we work, and we are excited to be able to provide the Sun Youth Organization with a court that may serve as a training ground for tomorrow’s NBA and WNBA stars.”
