March Break Basketball Camp

Sun Youth once again held its basketball camp and it was huge success!

Since its foundation Sun Youth has been committed to the promotion of healthy lifestyles and school retention in order to encourage the physical, social and intellectual development of young people. Over Spring break, Sun Youth once again held its basketball camp and it was huge success!

This year, more than thirty kids, a record number compared to previous years, participated in the camp. Boys and girls, aged 8 to15, were able to improve their play skills through activities such as drills, passing, shooting and dribbling. In addition, they also had fitness training designed to increase endurance and improve strength and stamina. The camp, run by Rodney Skerritt, Sun Youth’s basketball coordinator and Kara De La Perralle, Assistant Director of Sports and Recreation, was focused at understanding basketball at a conceptual level, which is good for kids who are new to the sport as well as competitive athletes who are trying to refine their game. Sun Youth also provided each child with a lunch throughout the week so they had enough energy to meet physical demands that vigorous exercise requires.

Sun Youth’s Spring Break Basketball Camp got really interesting this year thanks to special guests speakers and trainers. Maxime Paulhus Gosselin played his college ball at Davidson a NCAA Division 1 program from 2005-2009. Now, he is a motivational speaker for children with whom he shares life lessons. The Sun Youth campers were extremely pleased to be coached by him and listened very carefully to his wisdom about basketball. Clearly the campers will be able to grow and improve their play, their attitude and their self-confidence from the advice that Maxime gave them. Afterwards, trainer Nancy Forestal made the kids work hard. Through endurance exercises, she helped the kids to improve their motor skills. They also had the visit of two students from McGill’s Trauma Prevention Program who encouraged the kids to think about prevention when practicing basketball. On behalf of Sun Youth, we would like to thank these special guests for volunteering their time and inspiring our campers.

Sun Youth’s Spring Break Basketball Camp is a physical and mental process full of opportunities for young people to grow and learn, and this is an approach adopted by Sun Youth.
