While in the Sun Youth food bank we are getting ready to distribute Christmas baskets to thousands of needy families, other baskets will be subject to a lot of rivalries only a few feet away. This Thursday, December 19 will begin the 33rd Annual Sun Youth Christmas Basketball Tournament in the organization’s gymnasium, recently refurbished by the NBA through its NBA Cares program. This tournament opposes young athletes aged 16 to 21 years old coming from Quebec but also from Ontario and the United States.
This annual tradition showcases high caliber matches where the future stars of the sport get a chance to demonstrate their talent. The Hornets, Sun Youth’s basketball team, will of course be part of the competition and will aim for victory. The other teams involved in this competition are those of Collège Brébeuf, John Abbott College, Champlain College Lennoxville, St-Bruno and from CEGEPs de l’Outaouais and d’Alma. Our western neighbours are represented by teams from Vaughan High School (Toronto), Algonquin College (Ottawa) and the Guardsmen (Ottawa). Finally the teams from Bridgton and Lee Academy (Maine), last year’s returning champions, represent the United-States.
The finals of this tournament will be held this Sunday, December 22, as of 3:30 pm in the Sun Youth Gym. Basketball fans are therefore welcome. Admission fees of $5 are required for adults while students (with I.D.) and children are admitted for $3. Admission is free for children under the age of 7.
