HELP us build a safety net

Sun Youth helped Julie Lefebvre’s family

when her life took an unexpected turn.

Help us build a safety net

Together, we can build a safety net when it matters most.

Each day at Sun Youth, individuals turn to us at pivotal moments in their lives, turn to us for help. Their stories remind us of a simple truth: no one is immune to life taking an unexpected turn.

That is what happened to Julie Lefebvre.

What began as a seemingly mild allergic reaction left Julie in a wheelchair. A single mother of two boys, including an eldest son on the autism spectrum, she had to learn how to move forward differently, to persevere, and to do whatever it took to protect her family.

During this difficult time, Julie relied on food banks to make ends meet. To give her younger son, Justin, a positive outlet, she discovered our hockey program, and the extraordinary dedication of its coordinator, Vinnie Matteo. At the arena, Julie and her son found far more than a program. They found a welcoming environment, a safety net, and a community. Despite being in a wheelchair, Julie became deeply involved. She showed up, she gave back, and stood alongside others.

Today, she reflects:

“Thanks to Sun Youth, my son was able to play hockey like the other children. Today, he has grown into a hardworking adult who also cares for his mother.

Thank you for helping me through a difficult time without my children ever feeling different.”

Her words capture exactly what we strive to build together. Because survival alone is not always enough. Everyone deserves to be met with dignity, supported, and surrounded by care when life changes without warning.

Your generosity makes stories like Julie’s possible. Through your support, you provide far more than a service. You offer presence, stability, and a sense of belonging.

A few weeks ago, Julie and Justin went back to visit Vinnie at the arena, which proved to be a very emotional moment.
