Hornets Kick Off the Football Season!

Sun Youth Organization kicked off another football training camp with a lot…

On July 11th, Sun Youth Organization kicked off another football training camp with a lot of new faces showing up meeting with coaches and learning the positions one might be trying out for. Sun Youth has a long football tradition going back to the earliest days of the organization and a “One Team – One Family” motto which means hard work in a cohesive environment.

This approach is one that has been proven to work; through the years, many former Hornets football players have made the jump to the college, university and even professional levels. Many of them have ended up on the organization’s “Wall of Fame” in Sun Youth’s main building and on its website, serving as an inspiration to all the youth who pass through Sun Youth.  Developing our young Hornets into the best possible people on and off the field is a process that requires expertise and positive role models. Sun Youth’s dedicated coaches spend a lot time teaching the importance of education which is always required to play at the next level. When it comes to football, the attitudes about how to run practice have evolved to take into account first and foremost the players’ safety.

Last season, Sun Youth Hornets Football Program saw its young athletes improve their performance week after week. For many of them, it was a first experience of playing football, while some had been playing for many years. This situation proved to be a challenge for the coaching staff but, as always, Sun Youth’s volunteer coaches were up to the challenge with all teams making the playoffs. The bantam and peewee levels are very promising with a fresh crop of rookies who played in the league and provincial championships last fall. Peewee Head Coach Duane Collins was very enthusiastic about the upcoming season. “Last year’s successful season unfortunately finished with a championship loss”, he said. “However, this year’s group of kids have more than enough talent and we hope to achieve our ultimate goal of winning a championship.”

If you missed the start of the training camp but still want to try out for the Hornets football teams for this season call: (514) 842-6822 and ask for information on the football program. All activities take place after school hours and during weekends, as academic success is more important than simply having fun. The equipment is supplied, with the exception of shoes. Membership fees vary according to family income.
