On the front page of the November 24, 1956 edition of The Clark Street Sun, it was reported that 9-year-old Allan Schwartz from Devonshire School had been hospitalized for appendicitis. This might seem like a surprising front page title today, but back then, an appendicitis attack often required emergency open surgery (appendectomy) with general anesthesia, and it was serious matter. It was only later in the 20th century that less intrusive (antibiotic and laparoscopic) treatments appeared.
The newspaper article mentions that young Schwartz was an exemplary patient and that he was back on his feet in just a few days!
